Spots at fifteen feel enormous. Not just on the skin but emotionally, socially, at exactly the moment confidence matters most. If your teenager is dealing with acne, or if you are a teenager reading this yourself, the first thing to know is that it is incredibly common and, with the right approach, very manageable.
Why teenage skin behaves differently
During puberty, rising hormone levels trigger the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. That oil, combined with dead skin cells and naturally occurring bacteria, can block pores and cause the inflammation we recognise as spots. It is not about being dirty, not washing enough, or eating the wrong things (though some of those can play a role). It is primarily biology, and it tends to settle as hormone levels stabilise through the late teens and early twenties.
What tends to make things worse
A few habits are worth knowing about, because they are easy to fall into and easy to fix:
- Over-cleansing or using harsh, stripping products. These disrupt the skin's natural balance and can actually increase oil production in response.
- Skipping moisturiser. Oily skin still needs hydration. Without it, skin compensates by producing more oil.
- Heavy, pore-blocking makeup, especially if it is not removed thoroughly at the end of the day.
- Picking or squeezing. Deeply satisfying, almost never a good idea. It pushes bacteria deeper, prolongs healing and can leave marks that last far longer than the original spot.
- Switching products constantly in search of a quick fix. The skin needs time, usually at least six to eight weeks, to respond to any new routine.
Building a routine that helps
Simple and consistent beats complicated every time. A gentle, non-stripping cleanser morning and night, a lightweight moisturiser and SPF during the day is genuinely all most teenage skin needs as a starting point. If the acne is more persistent, look for products containing salicylic acid (which helps to clear congestion inside the pore) or niacinamide (which can help calm redness and support an even skin tone). Introduce one thing at a time, and give it a fair run before changing anything.
How a facial can help
A professional facial can be a really useful reset for congested or acne-prone skin. Our Skin Clarity facial is specifically designed for skin that needs deep cleansing support. It includes a thorough double cleanse, gentle exfoliation, extractions where needed and calming, targeted treatment to settle inflammation. We also take the time to look at your current routine, work out what is helping and what might be hindering, and put together a simple plan you can follow at home.
We see teenagers regularly at the studio and it is always a relaxed, judgement-free appointment. Booking a skin consultation first is a good way to have that conversation and work out whether a facial is the right next step.
When to see your GP
If acne is severe, covering large areas, leaving scars, or causing real distress, please do see your GP or a dermatologist. There are prescription options, including topical and oral treatments, that a skincare therapist cannot provide and that can make a significant difference in those cases. A facial works well alongside medical treatment, but it is not a substitute for it.
Common questions
Can a facial make acne worse?
Occasionally, in the first day or two after a deep cleanse or extraction treatment, you may see a small amount of purging as congestion comes to the surface. This is short-lived and normal. We always discuss this beforehand so there are no surprises.
What age is appropriate for a facial?
We welcome teenagers from around 14 upwards, with a parent or guardian's knowledge. A skin consultation first is a great starting point if you are unsure.
Are the products you use safe for sensitive or acne-prone skin?
Yes. We use Circadia professional skincare, which is formulated without unnecessary irritants and is well suited to reactive and acne-prone skin types. We always adapt the treatment to what your skin needs on the day.
