If you've never had a professional facial before, it's completely normal to feel a little unsure - what happens, will it be awkward, will someone judge your skincare routine? The short answer: it's a calm, friendly and genuinely relaxing experience, and there's nothing to be nervous about. Here's exactly how a first visit works at The Skin Studio.
It starts with a proper consultation
Every new client begins with a consultation and skin analysis - not a sales pitch, just a proper conversation about your skin. We'll talk through your skin history, your current routine, your lifestyle and what you'd like to work on, and take a closer look at your skin so any treatment is tailored to you rather than a one-size-fits-all protocol.
There's no judgement about your routine (or lack of one) - most people aren't sure what their skin needs, and that's exactly what the consultation is for. If you'd prefer advice before committing to a full treatment, a standalone skin consultation is also available.
The treatment itself
Once we understand your skin, you'll get comfortable and we'll begin. A facial is hands-on and relaxing: a thorough double cleanse, tailored exfoliation, treatment steps chosen for your skin on the day, often some soothing facial massage, and a finishing routine to leave your skin comfortable and glowing. Many clients drift off completely - it's as much a moment of calm as it is skincare.
We use Circadia professional skincare throughout, and depending on your skin we may include Dermalux LED light therapy - a gentle, drug-free light treatment that's deeply relaxing. Everything is explained as we go, and nothing happens that you're not comfortable with.
How your skin will feel afterwards
Straight after, most people notice their skin looks fresher, feels softer and has a healthy glow. A little warmth or mild pinkness can be normal for a short while, especially with more active treatments, and it settles quickly. We'll always tell you what to expect for your skin specifically.
The honest truth is that healthy skin is built with consistency, not a single appointment - but a good facial is a lovely reset and a clear step in the right direction. We'll suggest simple homecare and a realistic plan so the results carry on between visits. (Curious how often to come back? That's a whole topic of its own - and one we'll cover soon.)
How to prepare
- Come with clean skin if you can, but don't worry if you're arriving from work or with make-up on - we cleanse thoroughly anyway.
- If you use strong active ingredients (like retinol or acids), it's worth pausing them for a day or two beforehand - mention them at your consultation and we'll advise.
- Let us know about any medication, recent treatments (including Botox or filler), allergies or skin conditions, so we can keep your treatment safe and suitable.
- Allow a little extra time for your first visit, as the consultation is part of it.
If your skin has a medical condition - or you're ever unsure whether a facial is right for you - it's always worth checking with your GP first. We're happy to work alongside any medical care with gentle, supportive treatments.
Common questions
Do I need to do anything to prepare for my first facial?
Come with clean skin if you can, but it's fine to arrive with make-up on, as we cleanse thoroughly. If you use strong actives such as retinol or acids, it helps to pause them for a day or two beforehand and mention them at your consultation.
How long should I allow for my first appointment?
Allow a little extra time for your first visit, as it includes a consultation and skin analysis before the facial itself.
Do I need to undress for a facial?
No. A facial focuses on your face, neck and shoulders, so you stay dressed. You simply relax on the treatment bed and we keep you comfortable throughout.
