Dry or dehydrated? They're not quite the same

Although people often use the two interchangeably, dry and dehydrated skin aren't quite the same thing. Dry skin naturally produces less oil, while dehydrated skin is short on water. That's why some people can feel tight and thirsty while still getting oiliness or the odd breakout.

Dry skin often feels rough or flaky and can look a little flat, especially in colder months or after harsh products. Dehydrated skin tends to feel tight even when it's oily in places, and fine lines can look more obvious. The reassuring part is that both respond really well to the right care and a few simple changes at home.

How we help dry and dehydrated skin

We'll always start by understanding what's actually happening with your skin and what's contributing to the dryness. Sometimes it's your skincare routine, sometimes it's lifestyle, and sometimes it's simply the time of year. Every first visit begins with a consultation so we can get to the bottom of it before choosing your treatment.

From there we use Circadia professional skincare to leave your skin feeling soft, comfortable and properly looked after, and we'll often add Dermalux LED light therapy, a gentle, relaxing treatment that many people find leaves their skin looking calmer and healthier. Just as importantly, we'll help you with a simple, realistic routine for home, because the consistency between appointments is where the real difference is made.

An honest note: a good facial can make dry, dehydrated skin look and feel noticeably better, but healthy skin is built over time, not in a single appointment. If your skin is very dry, persistently itchy or cracked, or you think you may have a medical skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis, please speak to your GP or a dermatologist as well.

Dry & dehydrated skin: your questions

What's the difference between dry and dehydrated skin?

Although the words get used interchangeably, they're not quite the same. Dry skin naturally makes less oil, while dehydrated skin is short on water, and plenty of people have a bit of both. Dry skin tends to feel rough or flaky, whereas dehydrated skin can feel tight even when it still looks oily or congested.

Which facial is best for dry skin?

It really depends on your skin, which is why we always start with a consultation. For dry or dehydrated skin we often suggest the Signature Facial or Calm Restore with Circadia skincare, usually paired with Dermalux LED to leave skin feeling soft and comfortable.

Can LED light therapy help dry or dehydrated skin?

Yes. LED is one of the gentlest, most relaxing treatments we offer, and many people find it leaves dry or dehydrated skin feeling more comfortable and looking healthier. It's drug-free, suits most skin types, and works best as a short course.

How often should I have a hydrating facial?

It depends on your skin and what's behind the dryness. Some people notice a real difference after a single treatment, while others do best with a short course to get their skin back on track before moving to maintenance every four to six weeks. We'll suggest a realistic plan at your consultation.

Is a hydrating facial suitable for sensitive skin?

Usually, yes. Everything is gentle and tailored on the day, and the Calm Restore facial in particular is made for sensitive, reactive skin. Just flag any sensitivities when you come in and we'll adjust accordingly.
