If SPF is the step you skip when it's cloudy, you're not alone. Most of us grew up thinking sun cream was for holidays. But UV doesn't take a day off, and it's the single biggest factor in how skin ages over time.

UVA vs UVB: what's the difference?

UVB is the burning ray. It's the one that causes redness, and it does vary with the season and cloud cover. UVA is different. It penetrates deeper, it's present all year round, and it passes straight through glass. It's the ray most associated with long-term skin ageing, and it doesn't announce itself with a burn. You won't know it's doing anything until years later.

Why cloud cover isn't the same as sun cover

On an overcast day, up to 80% of UV still reaches your skin. SPF isn't about whether the sun feels strong. It's about consistent, daily protection from something you can't see or feel doing its work.

Finding one you'll actually wear

The best SPF is the one you use every day, which means it has to feel good on your skin. Modern formulas are a long way from the thick, white creams most of us remember. Look for a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or 50 in a texture that suits you. Lightweight fluid formulas sit well under makeup. Tinted versions can double as a skin-evening step. If you've avoided SPF because it broke you out or left a cast, it's worth trying again, because the options have changed significantly.

If you'd like a recommendation suited to your skin type, that's something we can cover in a consultation.

Common questions

What SPF factor should I use?
SPF 30 filters around 97% of UVB rays, SPF 50 around 98%. Both are good choices for everyday use. The more important thing is that you apply enough and reapply if you're spending time outside.

Can I use my moisturiser with SPF instead?
A moisturiser with SPF is better than nothing, but most people don't apply enough of it to reach the labelled protection. A dedicated SPF applied on top gives you more reliable coverage.

Does SPF cause breakouts?
Some older or heavier formulas can, but many modern SPFs are non-comedogenic and work well on acne-prone or sensitive skin. If you've had a bad experience before, it's worth trying a different formula rather than skipping it altogether.
