Why fine lines and softening firmness happen

As we get older our skin slowly makes less of the proteins that keep it plump and springy, so fine lines start to show and skin feels a little less firm.

It tends to creep up from our mid-twenties onwards, and a few things speed it along. Sun is the big one, which is why daily SPF matters so much. Dehydration makes fine lines look more obvious than they really are, and years of smiling, frowning and squinting leave their mark too. None of it is a problem to fix, it's just skin doing what skin does, and there's plenty we can do to help it look its best.

How we work on fine lines and firmness

Your first visit starts with a consultation so we can look at your skin properly and talk through what's bothering you and what you'd like to see. From there we put together a realistic plan rather than promising the world.

In the treatment room we use Circadia skincare to support firmer, smoother-looking skin, and we'll often add Dermalux LED, a relaxing light therapy that works quietly in the background to support your skin's own processes. The biggest difference, though, comes from what you do at home, and daily SPF is the single most useful habit for keeping skin looking younger for longer.

An honest note: facials and LED can soften the look of fine lines and help skin look smoother and firmer, but they work with your skin rather than freezing muscles or filling lines. That makes them different from injectables and fillers, which are medical procedures carried out by qualified medical practitioners. We don't offer injectables, and we won't promise to remove deeper lines. What we can do is help your skin look healthier and more rested, and we'll always be straight with you about what's realistic.

Fine lines & firmness: your questions

What causes fine lines and loss of firmness?

Mostly it's just age. As we get older our skin makes less of the proteins that keep it firm and springy, so lines start to show. Sun is the biggest thing that speeds it up, which is why we go on about SPF so much, and dehydration, years of expression and lifestyle all play a part too. None of it means anything is wrong, and there's a lot we can do to help.

Can a facial reduce fine lines?

A facial and LED can soften the look of fine lines and help skin look smoother, firmer and more rested. They work with your skin rather than freezing muscles or filling lines, so they're different from injectables and they won't remove deeper lines. The results build up gradually, so a bit of consistency really does pay off.

Does LED light therapy help with firmness?

A lot of our clients use Dermalux LED to support firmer, healthier-looking skin. The red and near-infrared light gently supports your skin's own processes, and it works best as a course alongside a facial rather than as a one-off.

What's the difference between a facial and injectables or fillers?

A facial works on the health and look of your skin. Injectables and fillers are medical procedures done by qualified medical practitioners, and they do something different. We focus on healthy, firmer-looking skin and the look of fine lines, and we don't offer injectables, which means we can always be honest with you about what a facial can and can't do.

Which facial is best for fine lines?

We usually point people towards the Peptide Lift + Glow, often with Dermalux LED added on. That said, every skin is different, so we'll have a proper look and decide together at your first consultation.

How often should I have a firming facial?

Most people start with a short course to get things moving, then settle into a facial every four to six weeks to keep it up, alongside good skincare at home and daily SPF. We'll talk through a realistic plan when we see you.
